Interviews

The following interview took place early in 1999. The interviewer is Ben Mechaly from Mp3 Indie Sounds (now defunkt). The band consists of Dirk Prysby (Guitar,Vocals), Antonio (Tony) Pantalones (Bass, Vocals) and Fred Beasley (Drums).

Ben: So how did you get the name Rubber Clown Car?

Dirk: My girlfriend came up with it - and it kind of stuck

Fred: It made as much sense as anything else we thought up

Ben: Such as?

Tony: Tony Romance and the Smoochies! (all laugh). I was in a band by that name by the way.

Ben: How would you describe your music?

Dirk: Rock, Pop or Alternative - it really doesn't matter ,the labels mean nothing anymore. We have a little bit of a lot of styles depending on the song. Some may have a punk influence, Fred's really into that.

Fred: I love that style and sound. Just raw and in your face.

Dirk: And Tony and I came from bands with pop influences as well.

Ben: As long as we're on the subject, what or who are your major influences?

Dirk: The Who, Matthew Sweet, The Goo Goo Dolls, Robyn Hitchcock

Tony: I'll add Queen, The Kinks

Fred: And don't forget Bob Mould, The Damned and The Buzzcocks

Ben: That's an interesting list of influences. Do you all write songs?

Dirk: Yeah, we all do. Some songs come about as a band, some are written by an individual and he brings it in and we do our best to make it unrecognizable (laughs). Fred wrote "Vanity Affair" by himself and we couldn't improve on that arrangement!

Fred: I play a little guitar

Tony: I'll say

Ben: So what are your plans for the future?

Dirk: We plan on having a CD available in the fall

Fred: And we'll be on every mp3 site in the world!

Tony: We're going to have every site link back to us. Would that be hard to do?

Dirk: Oh yeah, I'm sure that's real simple, everybody does it (all laugh)

Ben: Well thanks for your time and good luck

Dirk: Thanks for having us

Fred: Not the first time we've been had

Dirk: Yeah, this is the music business after all
